No, the ports aren't released. Windows just assigns the next higher
port. I've confirmed this with a number of manufacturers of devices
that connect by Bluetooth serial connections. I'm also having a
problem with a modem that after a computer upgrade is now being seen
as a Bluetooth serial device and is assigned a com port out of range
of the normal com 1,2 or 3 where it should be and was before the
computer upgrade. We've tried everything and can't get it assigned to
com 3 where it belongs. Don't you just love computers???

Gil or anyone else knowledgable in this area,
What you say makes sense unfortunately. I apparently don't have as
many devices connected as you do as my com ports are now in the area of 14.
What I'm wondering though is when you plug in a device such as a
small external disc, or maybe a braille display, etc., obviously
windows sets up the driver for
the device and assigns it a virtual com port. If you remove that
device simply by unplugging it and maybe rebooting, it does not show
up in the hardware
anywhere that I can see.
So my question to anyone who know is if that virtual com port is
released when you unplug the device. In other words, could you get
the com port down to a
reasonable number if you unplugged several usb-related devices? I
also have a couple of card readers which I use from time to time, so
if the ports aren't
released, something like that could drive the number up too.
Thanks,
Don
