An apend command, in addition to ensuring that you won't write something that you don't want in the middle of your file, is also good if you're reading something, say like a test, and you want your answers to be at the bottom. Then if you have cursor tracking off, you don't have to keep using the "find" command to find your place after you've written each answer. Just one of the many instances in which I've found it helpful. Sure, you can do the 456 chord command each time you choose to write something at the end of a file, but the option of not having to do this is a nice feature to have. As a result those of us who had gotten used to it really appreciate it.
