Hi Terry,
First, It would clarify the situation, if we use the term "T-elecommunication
D-evice for the D-eaf, instead of "T-elety-pe (which is what TTY stands for.)
Yes, with a TDD, you make calls to others with a TDD or to the State Relay
(Most states in the US have a Relay service for deaf and disabled.)
Freedom Scientific, as Ray indicated, has incorporated TDD software into the
Pac Mate. Carol is correct in that the TDD uses a different Protocol. At the
same time, if you have a computer and appropriate software, you can communicate
with the "Internet Relay," meaning you can call this service when trying to
contact a hearing person and they will "relay" what is said.
The second issue, which Humanware appears to have solved, is "face-to-face
communication." For example, I will undergo surgry later this month and won't
be able to use the device that helps me understand some speech. Since I need
to interact with hearing folks who do not know Sign Language, I have to have a
means of "receptive" communiction. Using a Palm View and Bluetooth keyboard,
I can use my BN for this purpose.
I hope this is clear?
KC
