Jim: you get those silly attachments when you've got your email on plain text but the person who's sending does not. Because you've elected to see your mail in plain, the HTML component of their message has to go somewhere. This is a great reason for encouraging all of us to switch our PC email to plain.
I agree with you about trying to read mime in the body of an email, though. I used to get heaps of it when I joined this list for the first time back in 2002and only had a BN. It is readable, though it's a pain.
