I have an old Reading Edge and I can transfer files from it to the BN using
the serial cable.

: What it comes down to is circumstances and user preference. Rich
makes
: good points, but we have sold enough reading machines to know that as more
: expensive as they might be and as much as one cannot necessarily edit
: material, they are still a viable and worthwhile solution for some folks.
: And the one we carry as a floppy drive, so with a USB floppy, as I use,
you
: can transfer files to the BN or VN.

: First of all, with any stand-alone reading machine, if you really think
that
: what you have is just a scanner, you have been deceived.
: You have, a scanner and a PC all in one box. There's no way around it,
you
: are using a computer!
: Second, you have paid most likely twice what you would have to pay if you
: bought a computer and a scanner and software.
: Finally, OCR software allows you to do many things that no reading machine
: will. For instance, creating bookmarks with study notes in files, looking
: up words in a fully functional dictionary, and giving you the ability to
: create a list of corrections for common scanner errors.
: There is so much more, but I'll get moderated if I keep going, so I'll
crawl
: back under my mossy stone.

::I agree with Richard. The stand alone units were designed for a niche
:: market, namely people who only want to read, and do not want or need any
:: additional computer functionality. If you already have a PC, you have
:: no need for such a device. And, a PC with OCR software will still be
:: less expensive than one of these devices.
