Hi, I use the text adventure games with my Braille student. He is about 13 and doesn't want to learn Braille but when he walked in the other day and I told him we would be playing a computer game he was excited. I put headphones in so I could hear what he was doing and give him hints because it was a game that I had played all the way through and he Braille isn't up to reading long messages so I was able to help him with them. I changed the display to grade one and I have a QT so he didn't have to type in Braille but that was alright because he needed to work on his reading. He was upset at the end when he had to stop playing and when he found out that it was going to be a month before he could come again because of school camp he was disappointed. he only gets to come once every two weeks but normally he doesn't mind missing out on a session. So I have found the games a great teaching tool but I can also see the need of TTY because we have a few blind/deaf clients calling the office and they have to do it through a relay service.
Well I've gone on enough. >From Shaz. ----- Original Message ----- From: "rachael warke" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Braillenote List" <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, March 24, 2006 6:21 PM Subject: Re: [Braillenote] Re: Trivia Games Dear List, Despite the spate of trashing the text adventure games that has been going on on this list now for a couple of days, I would like to point out that the games are thoroughly accessible without any speech at all. Also, you can change your reading grade to computer braille if you like. And I would imagine the input as well, though I don't see the need for it. It seems to me that a little fun and levity is acceptable on this device. PC's have had games for many years, as has been pointed out countless times, when this list was clammering for games to be included on the BN. Of course I'm in favor of anything which would make life easier for the deaf-blind. A person would have to be insane as well as insensitive to oppose any such thing. I'm sure the HW staff is equally supportive, at least in an emotional sense. They do, unfortunately, have to take things into account like cost, demand, and technical plausibility, none of which are things I know about. But in the meantime, assuming that any individual can simply choose what the company should do based on his/her own interests and needs is just a bit simplistic, in my opinion. We asked for games, for years, and we got them. There's been a tremendous outpouring of wishes for a TTY component, and hopefully it will be answered as well. Just as the callers for games have been fairly vocal in their complaints about HW's choice of games, so there's likely to be an uproar whenever they come up with a TTY solution. It may cost extra money. It may necessitate getting another piece of hardware. We don't know. But the fact is that, if it were as simple as some of you are making it out to be, it would have been there by now.
