I disconnnected active sync, and then I put the display on "com 1", brought the computer back up, and it seems to be working -- I can read the screen!

That often gets in the way. Also, after you selected the comm port and hit OK, did you unload Window-Eyes and then re-load it? Sometimes, that is all it takes. I just tried it with an mPower and it worked after re-loading Window-Eyes. If you did that, and it still doesn't work, it may be one of those things that you'll need to call GW Micro on and have them trouble shoot it with you.
