This is Jospeh. What version of JAWS does he has? What is the connection
type that he wishes to use? Serial connection is an easy type to use,
although many of us on the list use Bluetooth. Plus, what version of KeySoft
does he has?
In order to use mPower (or any BN family) as a braille display, you need:
A desktop or a laptop sith JAWs on it (I recommend Jaws 5.0 or higher)
A serial cable or Bluetooth connection kit (usualy a dongle; Bluetooth will
only work if you have a Bluetoth adapter plus Keysoft 7.0)
BrailleNote mPower (I recommend KeySoft 7)

1. Make suere that BrailleNote is selected as a braille display in JAWS
interface.
A. On the JAwS window, go to Options/Braille. Choose Add.
2.
B. Click on Next. At the list box that apears, select BrailleNote and press
enter on Next.
C. After a brief pause, click on Finish. The braille display is ready to go.
Note: On one of the dialogs, it will ask you for the com port (if your
laptop has a serial port). Select Com 1.
2. Prepare the display:
A. On the mPower, go to Main Menu, then Terminal for Screen Reader. In
KeySoft 6.2, it will immediately start the application.
Note: before you select the item, make sure that JAWS is turned off. Connect
the cable. Another note: In KeySoft 7.0, a prompt appears whether you want
ti use serial or Bluetooth. In this example, choose serial.
B. Restart JAWS. If you are using JAWS 5.1 or earlier, the string at the Run
dialog are as follows:
System Drive\JAWSXX\jfw.exe where system drive is C drive and XX is the
version number. The braille display will show the contents of the screen.

This example assumes that your laptop has a serial port. In order to use
Bluetooth, you need some additional items and steps:
Requrement:
BrailleNote mPower with KeySoft 7.0
A Bluetooth dongle
JAWS 7.1 or higher
1. Make sure that Windows has recognized the Bluetooth adapter. For this
time, use Microsoft's own Bluetooth driver.
2. Prepare and pair:
A. On the computer, go through stpes that has been mentioned for adding a
braille display. At the com port prompt, select the com port that is
associated with the Bluetooth adapter.
Note: In JAWS 7.1, this process has changed. Refer t Jaws 7.1 help for
further explanation.
B. On the BrailleNote, go to Option/Connectivity. Select Bluetoth. Turn
Bluetooth on, and at the search prompt, type yes.
C. After a brief pause, it will show the list of devices. Your computer
should be listed there. Select it and press enter.
D. At the list of services, braille display sghould sho up (or similar
item). Select it, and a the pair prompt, select yes. If it asks you for the
authentificaiton code, type it, and press enter. It is now ready to go.
2. Shutdown and restart: refer to the instructions abaove. At this point, go
to Main Menu and select Terminal for Screen Reader. Shuwtdown jAWS, and at
the mPower, select Bluetooth. Restart JAwS.

Terms used in this instructions:
System Drive: a drive where Windows is installed (typically C drive)
Bluetooth: a short range wireless connection that can work up to 30 feet (10
meters)

Things that you hve to know:
1. In order to use Bluetooth connection, you need JAWS 7.1 or higher on the
computer's end, KeySoft 7.0 or higher on the mPower's end, and a Bluetoth
adapter. Make sure that you select the right com port.
2. At this time, Braille Display using USB connection is not supported.
3. Most laptops these days does not even have a serial port. In this case,
you need to use Bluetoth. Check out the list archive at

Would someone mind sending me easy directions for using the mpower as a
braille display with my son's laptop? He has JAWS on the laptop. He
hasn't been able to find the directions in the manual. Thanks so much.
