just to mention in general that for a fast response it's useful to include 
the model and type of your machine, since a lot of things depend on a) 
keyboard type and b) mPower / classic / PK-ness of your unit.  This is 
merely a suggestion and I'm not in any way complaining! now onto batteries 
...

Well, you can recalibrate the battery in the way I've just explained, or 
you can just run it until the battery is empty and then recharge it to 
full.  The classic has a slight problem in reporting whether the battery 
gauge is accurate; but you can still get the percentage left by going into 
support information mode and pressing P - I have just checked this on a QT 
model:

So BT - press SPACE with O, SPACE with I, then P to get the level
and QT - press FUNCTION with O, READ with I, then P to get the level

and 

BT - press SPACE with O, SPACE with I, then F to start calibration
QT - press FUNCTION with O, READ with I, then F to start calibration
