Hi, Ann,
Your message was excellent except for one thing. The BrailleNote
must be turned on and in the terminal mode before you boot up the
computer. Once the Pc is on, you can set up WindowEyes the way
you described. In fact, the BN must be on and in terminal mode
before the PC is booted up. Since I use a classic as a braille
display with WE, I just leave the cables plugged in and the BN
plugged in and turned on all the time. The AC adapter for the BN
is also plugged in so there is no battery drain, (grin).

Subject: [Braillenote] Braille display
Hi Amber,
Did you tell Window-Eyes you have a Braille Display? You've
gotta
tell both Window-Eyes and the BrailleNote what you want done,
Amber.
You have to say, "Now look here you two, you gotta work together!
Window-Eyes, here's the Braille display I want you to use.
BrailleNote, here's your command to tell Window-Eyes to look for
you
on the serial port! Now get your act together and be a team!"
<smile> Now of course, if you talk outloud to your equipment,
somebody may find out and tell the folks at the local hospital,
but if
you tell them you didn't expect an answer, they'll quit
harrassing
you.
Seriously, Amber, here's what to do.
1. Connect your BN and your PC together with the serial cable.
Be
sure you know which port you've connected to on the PC.
Usually
PC's these days only have two serial ports, so if this whole
thing
doesn't work, just switch to com2.
2. Go into Window-Eyes Control Panel. Go to its file menu with
alt-f.
3. Use your up-arrow, the menu entry you want is at the bottom
of the
list, so using your up-arrow makes sense. Choose the item
that
says "choose a Braille display".
4. Press Enter.
5. You will be placed in a combo box. You will see a whopping
lot of
Braille displays. Go down to item 16, where it says
BrailleNote
with keyboard entry.
6. Since you've been in a combo box, merely placing the cursor
on
this entry will select it for you.
7. Tab once. This is where you choose your port. Try com1
first.
This is also a combo box and placing your cursor on the item
you
want should be sufficient.
8. Tab one more time, you'll see a command line item. Tab past
it to
the OK button and hit the space-bar.
9. Turn on the BrailleNote.
10. In the main menu, go all the way down to Braille terminal.
Press
enter.
You should be good to go, although you may have to restart
Window-eyes. You can just restart your computer if that's
easier,
whatever you like. Warning, if com1 doesn't work, choose com2.
and
proceed with the rest of the steps.
Warning 2, if you want to use the same com port for Activesync or
a
visual terminal, you have to tell Window-eyes to forget what you
told
it before about the Braille Terminal, and use the port for
something
else. You do this by going back into WE and choosing "none" in
that
first combo box in the Braille Terminal menu. I just learned
this on
Thursday, after calling Tech support in desperation because I
needed
both to demo the Braille display and the Visual display on my
laptop
the next day. BTW, Sarah in Tech support in CA was great, thank
you
Sarah! <smile> I was a little stressed!
