the electronic noise would be one potential problem.  The other is the 
amount of circuitry needed for a decent AM receiver - quite a lot compared 
to an FM receiver which can be implemented on one chip these days.  AM 
tends to need lots of external components, like coils of wire, capacitors, 
a decent aerial and so on.
