Daisy d a i s y are specially formatted digital books that allow for an amazing array of navigation. If you are reading for pleasure, they really do not make any difference than listening to a tape. However, if you are using a manual, text book, or something that you want to skip around in, then they are fantastic. Daisy books are marked up to allow you to call up any page just by using a go to page function, skip by paragraph, sentence, word, or section. Navigation is divided by levels depending on how the book is setup. If you are using a standard textbook it would typically be divided like such: Major sections part one, part two, etc would be labeled level one; chapters within the sections would be labeled level two; subsections in a chapter would be level three; and any sections below that would be further divided. By breaking the book up in this manner, you could easily skip to any section, chapter, or subdivisions thereof.
Currently, you can download daisy books from Bookshare. RFB&D is the other major producer but so far there hasn't been any mention from Humanware if we can use these yet. Another way to get daisy books is if you have Kurzweil version 10. This will allow you to create daisy books out of anything that you scan or basically any document that you can open in Kurzweil such as text documents and Msword documents. The only draw back to using Kurzweil to make daisy books is that you must go in and set the navigation levels yourself. Also, if you download a daisy book from Bookshare, it is text only. You can open it in Kurzweil and create a daisy book with audio which would allow you to have both on the BN. I hope that clarifies things for you.
