Hi all,
Sarah wrote and asked for me to give more details and, as she's not the only
one now, here's the post I sent by reply. When looking earlier I discovered
that it went back to her personally but others may want it.
OK, for simplicity's sake I'll cut out all the sweat and toil I had and give
a further explanation. Feel free to
Skip the post of course if you wish! <SMILE. Hopefully you will find this
can now be done without too much know-how required of any user. Just bear
in mind that you *DON't* need to do this if you're just keeping a list of
favorites and save them as outlined in the BN manual. They're easy and
great to have in that format, though care needs to be taken about the number
of files stored in each folder. This was the basis of my problem . . ..
With a large folder full of web pages you run into a big problem with
possible lockups along the way, because it can take the BN something like 10
minutes even to have a list of these files and it's still very difficult
(pretty impossible) to get around the list. you either have to split that
folder (which I just didn't want to do) or go on looking for a solution.
This is what you can do if you want things just as you want them! <Smiles>
Having made your folder, I suggest on a Flash card, add just a few HTML
documents to give you a basis on which to work. (The rest can be copied in
later, when you don't have to access that folder directly and take a coffee
break while you do so!) Now load one into Keyweb by going through the
slightly longer method of opening that file in the folder you have chosen.
(If anyone gets stuck at this point I can give further instruction but, for
the sake of keeping this a little shorter, will not do this right now.)
Having opened that HTML file, press E-chord once on the BN (QWERTY Escape)
and you'll be back at the "Address" prompt, only this time you'll have the
address of that file showing. You'll see that it will start with
file://\
(notice the backslash at the very end of that line)
and (if taking files from a CF card as I am) it will then continue
CompactFlash\
(Notice that Backslash again at the end of the last line):
This will be followed by the foldername where your files are stored. In my
case it is Amp\
(Again there is the Backslash).
You then can have a filename ending in .html.
Once you have the basic URL, save it in your Favorites so that you can refer
to it and tweak where necessary for other files.
I discovered that, due to some restrictions in Windows CE4, it is *NOT*
recommended that numbers are included in filenames; but I didn't want to
discard them. I think at this point I had to dig into the file structure
containing one of my URLS to see how it was done and I learned a little
trick along the way about inserting the combination characters %20 instead
of a space character which proved to be vital for me to keep a meaningful
filename.
An example of one of my URLS, in full, reads as follows: (Check the capital
letters and / characters etc):
File://\CompactFlash/Amp/1%20Chronicles%201.html
This loads the first chapter of 1 Chronicles from my Amp (short for
Amplified) folder.
From now on you can make choices about making further URLS. Remember, if
you make as many URLS (even though they're small shortcut files) you'll
reach the same point of frustration, when it will take the BN at least ten
minutes to bring up that file list as there are (I think) 1190 files,
including an Index. As a work around I chose to limit these so I had each
book with Chapter 1 as Favorites addresses for a startingpoint. These I
have in a separate folder. I now "tweak" the address of any page I want,
remembering that I already have a Favorites file for the book and first
chapter.
Well, I hope that gives you a little insight as to how I try to "beat the
system" with my PK and Mike's mPower. HTH:

Hi Carol,
I am curious about your method of saving pages offline on the BN. Will you
clarify?
Thank you,
Sarah

Well, if it's just the Favorites you need, as in another post, copy them
from your computer - much the easiest!
If you need to keep HTML pages on your BN (as I do) then I'll gladly talk
you through the process if I can, but only if that's really what you need to
do.
The reason for my saying this is that it does take quite a lot of playing
around and it's not worth the doing unless you have a good reason.
My reason is this: I have HTML Bible files on my BN and I want to read
them. The folder is huge and a files list takes ages to be produced, so I
had to find another way that suited me . . .. I did it but don't recommend
it for the sake of playing around.
Come back to me, off list, if you need to.

You can, if you make a shortcut to the URL and have that WEB page on your
BN. I do it all the time and those shortcuts have a definite advantage when
I want a page from a very large list of files which takes forever to open in
the BN! <SMILE>
It was a lot of work though and I do hope that the day will come soon when
HW can get us a fix to this one!

Hi,
I can answer your first question only, since it deals with favourites.
Favourites are links to web pages that you can visit. It's just like a
shortcut to an application on the PC's start menu. However, you cannot
view favourites offline, I'm afraid.
Hope this helps.

Okay, I have read the sections regarding favorites in the manual. I am
still a little confused. Are favorites links to websites or are they
actual
web pages that have been saved for viewing off-line?
Also, how do I transfer my favorites/bookmarks of links from PC to the
mPower QT? Technically, I use Firefox but I can simply import them back
into Internet Explorer in order to get them in the right format to use on
the BNQT.
TIA,
Cindy
