My mPower gets a little warm sometimes, but never gets hot.
Sometimes though, I do smell a tiny bit of an odor which usually
happens when I am draining the battery or recharging it after a
large drain.
I can only describe it as kind of like the smell you get from a
new electronic appliance.
It doesn't really smell like something is burning though, and as
I said before, it never gets really hot, maybe a little warm but
that's it.

I am reading your e-mail here, and I have a comment.
The loaner unit I am using right now, gets hot the minute I plug
in the ac adapter.
When I had my unit, which is being repaired, it never got hot,
this unit I have you can tell it is getting hot just by touching
it lightly, which is not good.
When you say your cell phone gets hot, I never have had a cell
phone battery get hot, and I would think that if it is a
braillenote, cell phone or any other device, if it is getting
hot, that is not a good sign.

this is just how batteries work. Basically, recharging
involves
pushing energy into them, the last 30% of which generates a fair
amount of
heat. There are lots of safety controls on the charger, so it
will finish
after a certain period of time, if the voltage goes too high, or
if the
battery gets too hot. In this context, too hot is about 50
degress
Celcius (sorry if you work in Fahrenheit but I don't! somewhere
about the
same temperature as a hot cup of tea). You'll probably find that
other
battery powered devices feel quite hot after they've been charged
- my
mobile phone does, for example, although that's a slightly
different kind
of battery.
