I'd like to be able to set a different alarm, I find the one annoying,
especially if it won't shut off like it is supposed to.

Chris, I do not know if it would be loud enough to do that.  I have never
tried listening to the alarm tones for the planner without my hearing aids
in.  

There are several of us on this list and we have varying degrees of hearing
loss and probably vision as well.  I have what is considered a mild to
moderate hearing        loss and I also have almost no vision, having only
light perception and maybe some large objects up close but with no detail.  

I hope this begins to answer your question.  I do not use my VN as an alarm
though.
