Kathleen, This is solely my opinion. Back when HumanWare upgraded the current Classic from Windows CE 2.12 to 4.2, they have invested their time on compiing the software to run on new version. With the current upgrade method, it is possible to replace the current operating system with Windows CE 5.0. Other fact is that if HumanWare decides to upgrade the operating system, the developers must work on testing the actual upgrade. This involves a lot of beta testing, bug tracking system, etc. There are numberous reasons to consider when upgrading: 1. Conversion of data: when HumanWare upgraded the OS back in 2004, they work mostly on converting KeyList, KeyMail, and KeyPlan databases to compile (work) under Windows CE 4.2 (same as Windows Mobile 2003). Part of the upgrade involves conversion of databases to work with the new format, assuming that 5.0 uses a different method of storing data. 2. License: in order to upgrade to 5.0, HumanWare must license the master copy of Windows CE 5.0, make changes, and distribute it with appropriate KeySoft version. That is the most worried issue right now. There are numberous pros and cons when dealing with OS upgrade, from general and technical perspectives: 1. From general perspective, upgrading to a new version means that you'll get the latest technology availible to you. 2. From technical view, it means that you'll get more technical functionality. The downsides are: 1. It sometimes fails, meaning that the upgrade sometimes does not work. In this case, you have to send your BN to HumanWare to have it repaired, or in the case of Classic or an mPower, a new motherboard is needed. 2. From technical perspective, they need to make sure that every code must work on the new version.
Some of the improvements on Windows CE 5.0 icnlude: 1. Ability to view MS PowerPoint presentation (probably with KeyWeb) 2. Error reporting, which Mary Ellen mentioned is implemented (assuming that you have some sort of ways of connecting to the Internet) That is my general opinions on operating system (OS) upgrades. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of kathleen spear Sent: Friday, September 08, 2006 10:46 PM To: Braillenote List Subject: RE: [Braillenote] I've got an idea for hw. Josepeh, Do you know WHY HW hasn't upgraded to Windows CE 5.0? (The issue has been raised several times, so I'm curious to know what the problem might be in going forward.)
