It is possible to use the Braillenote as a Braille display in one of two
connections: serial or bluetooth. USB is not supported yet. Assuming
that you want your son to use it as a bluetooth display, below are the
hopefully basic steps in how to configure JAWS to use the MPower as a
display.
1. Create a virtual com (serial) port by using the bluetooth software
that came with your computer. This, of course, will depend on the
bluetooth software.
2. Now in the JAWS window, go to the options menu, choose Braille, and
press enter to open the Braille basic settings dialogue.
3. If the Braillenote is not listed in the list of displays, tab to and
activate the add Braille display button to run the JAWS setup.
4. Select (check) the BrailleNote in the Braille components tree, and
press enter.
5. You'll now be asked for the port to which this display is connected.
Choose the port assigned by your bluetooth software. For example, if the
software assigned com4 as the virtual serial port, choose com4, and hit
enter.
6. You'll then be asked for the default display. In case things don't
work right away, I suggest you select "No display" and hit enter.
7. Hit enter until JAWS completes setup.
When JAWS starts again, do the following:
1. On your MPower, go to the main menu with space dots 1-2-3-4-5-6 (or
press space with dots 1-5 until it says main menu), and type "t" to
activate the Terminal for Screen Reader.
2. In the "Terminal for Screen Reader Port?", type "b" to activate the
bluetooth option.
3. A dialogue box may appear on your PC asking if you wish to authorize
the connection between the PC and the BrailleNote. Follow the
instructions.
4. Now, when it says "Terminal Ready", open the options menu in the JAWS
interface, and choose Braille.
5. In the list of displays, choose Braillenote and press enter.
6. JAWS should now start to send information to the Braille Note. To
enable grade 2 translation, open the Braille options dialogue under the
set options menu of the JAWS configuration manager, and check "Grade 2
enable". There are also other grade 2 options.
I apologize for the long reply, but I hope this has got you and your son
started. Good luck.
