I often actually forget about the SD card in the slot, I have reset the unit
with just pressing the button on the side multiple times with the card in
and no problems. However, the time I did a battery re-calibration, and when
I had to do service resets when I was trying to install 7.1 I did remove the
card.

Did you do a reset with the cards still in the slots?

I have never had any problems but I do remove them before a reset even if
the unit is locked up and doesn't give you the "sd card removed"
message.
