Yes, A database for recipes in theory would be an ideal way to keep records. It would be some work to start with, but in terms of organizing data it would really be beneficial in the long run. The manner in which such a database was designed might tend to be fairly important, however. However, the devil is in the details, and the most tedious part of creating a database is entering data. However, if you create individual files for each and every recipe, you are still entering data, and you don't have the ability to perform the kinds of queries one could perform using a database.
