I think one thing that holds notetaker manufacturers away from
releasing SDK's is they worry about the reputation of the notetaker
itself being damaged or tarnished by people writing unreliable or
simply bad applications. Even the most intelligent of persons can tend
to blame the notetaker itself when a badly written app causes it to
malfunction (think of how many people blame Windows or the computer
itself when we get a blue screen, when in fact it could possibly just
be a badly written driver or application that has nothing to do with
Microsoft or Dell/HP/etc).

Also, a lot of times SDK's are not free, so as to weed out those
people who just want to use it as a toy to write useless toy apps; the
only problem is that it usually costs a pretty high amount and
precludes anyone who wishes to contribute apps for free. Blazie's SDK
was on the order of $400 and I could not afford that in those days,
and even today I'd have a major struggle affording it, so I never was
able to develop for BNS even though I wanted to. If/when I do write
apps for the BrailleNote I'd love to be able to release them for free
but for that to happen the SDK would have to be very inexpensive or
free.

I think it's fair to include some sort of disclaimer in as many places
as possible reminding people that third-party apps are coded by
individuals and HW can't be responsible for any bugs or inadequacies
in such apps.

Tara,
SDK stands for Software Development Kit.
This allows a programmer to write software
for a particular devices such as BrailleNote.
