A Bad Night to be Out!
Dustin Fuller had come nearly face to face with death, when suddenly the
school bell rang and it jarred him back to reality. He had been
daydreaming again. Gordon Tincher, his best friend, who had been sitting
in the desk right behind him in History class, asked him ...
"Are you ok, Bud? That's the 4th time this week you've done that. What
gives? You're gonna get in trouble! Get a grip will ya?"
"Yeah, I'm alright." Dustin replied, shuddering just a bit. "I .. I
don't really know what's wrong. ... I just keep thinkin'. .. Ohhh,
(shaking his head quickly) skip it! It's just a stupid dream anyway." They
both picked up their books and belongings and hurried out of the room and
down through the crowded hallways.
The sounds of lockers banging all around them. Those sounds always made
Gordon jump even though he should have been used to them by now.
It was school after all! But Gordon, as always, pushed aside the all the
sounds and the creepy feelings he always had about them once he and Dustin
finally got outside. It was 3:15 p.m. and school was at last over for
another day. And they were most definitely GLAD of IT!!
They walked together down the narrow country road for a short while.
"So, how much homework ya got, Gordo?" Dustin finally asked.
"Oh, not too much, why? Whad'ya have in mind?" Gordon answered.
"Can you come over for a while? I want to show you something. I found it
yesterday." said Dustin, sounding a bit nervous even to mention it, but
there was a touch of needing his best friend's thoughts on it too. "Yeah,
I guess so. Gotta stop by my house first though." Gordon said.
They had come and gone from Gordon's house when a loud,
piercing scream came from out of nowhere, causing all the crows in the
trees to suddenly flee their perches.
The boys looked at each other and with exactly the same thought in mind
... dive for cover! The scream let out again. "Hey Dust? That was louder
this time don't you think? Closer maybe?" Gordon whispered, looking all
around them.
"I can't tell, really." Dustin replied.
"Let's get back to my house!" Gordon said. He could feel his heart
racing.
The scream was heard yet again. Much louder, and closer. This time both
of the boys made up their minds to run. They got up at the same time but
were pressed back down by a hand on the back of their necks from behind
them. Followed by a deep, low, stern "Shhhhhhush!" They were back on
their knees peering through the
brush when a screaming, bluish, wraithlike figure flew by them.
It had almost lightning speed. The two boys were in too much
shock to look at each other, much less make a sound. "Mighty
lucky it didn't see you." the voice behind them said again in a
whisper. The boys trembled uncontrollably. They now tried to free
themselves from the hands that had had them pinned. They
went down again, pushed back by the weight of the huge hands.
"Shh! Hold on I say! Wait a minute. I'll tell ya when it's safe. Then
I'll let ya go, alright?" The boys stayed put as ordered.
They couldn't of lifted the heavy hands off of them anyway. So they just
shook there, on the ground. Tears of fear streaming down their faces.
The screaming sounds finally trailed off, as did the pressure upon their
necks.
They got up and turned around to see ...

There was no one there!
"Huh?" Gordon said. "What was ..."
Dustin put a finger to his lips to signal that Gordon should be quiet.
"Shh!" he whispered. "Whatever it was, it's gone, but it didn't go far."
Dustin didn't know how he knew this, but he did. He had
strong sense of deja-vu. "We have to get out of here." Dustin whispered.
"Whoever it was that saved us this time won't be here if that thing comes
back."
They left.
They headed for Dustin's house. "So what did you want to show me?" asked
Gordon in an effort to take his mind off of what had just happened.
"I ... I can't tell you. You won't believe me until you see it."
There was something about Dustin's voice that made Gordon feel as if he
really didn't want to see whatever it was.
They reached Dustin's house and went into his room. "So ... what is it?"
asked Gordon.
Dustin walked silently to the closet and opened the door.
Gordon peered over Dustin's shoulder and nearly screamed in horror when he
saw ...

The shrunken, petrified body of a three-headed rat!
"Oh my gosh, Dustin! Where did you find that?! That's unreal!!" Gordon
exclaimed loudly.
"Shhh! Gordon, I don't want everybody in the house to know. They'd
completely freak if they saw this. Especially my mother. Besides, I
didn't really find it, it kind of found me." Dustin replied.
"Whatcha mean, it found you?" Gordon asked.
"Well, believe it or not, it was out on our front step when I got home
yesterday. It was all wrapped up and in this old, brown, casket-like box.
Luckily, mom, dad and Wanda wasn't home. Anyways, I picked it up, opened
it, freaked when I saw it, looked all around to see who might have left it
here. I didn't see anybody though." Dustin explained.
"Why on earth did you bring it in your house then? It could be cursed!
Oh, and how do you know whether or not it was meant for you, or did you?"
Gordon questioned rapidly.
Dustin walked over to his waste basket and removed the tattered old brown
wrapping. Flattened it out and showed it to Gordon. "See? Right there
... Dustin Fuller ... but whoever brought it didn't put my address on
it. I guess they figured that wasn't needed."
Gordon gazed at the paper for a long moment. "Dustin, ... dude, listen
man, this IS a curse! I mean ... it just HAS to be! Who or ... well, I
should say what on earth in it's right mind would leave something like
this on somebody's front step?"
Dustin just shook his head.
"Hey Dust, you know what? It kind of reminds me of a story I read a long
time back. I think it was called uhh ... The Monkey's Paw. I can't
remember who the story was written by though. Maybe you should try making
a wish on it or something."
Seemingly, Gordon had forgotten that the wishes that were made in that
story he read had some pretty dire consequences.
"Uh uh! No way man! ...'" Dustin said emphatically. "I remember that
story! Like you, can't remember who wrote it though. But I am not about
to wish something without getting this checked out."
"Oh yeah? Who are you going to show this to? I don't know of .. wait!
... yes I do! ... Dust, how about Madame Thesherly? Down by Opal Creek?"
Gordon suggested.
"Yeah! I know her. She's that one ...'" He was about to finish what he
was saying when a voice came to them from downstairs. "Dustin, are you up
there? We're home."

"Uh-oh!" said Dustin, hurriedly restoring the hideous three-headed rat's
corpse to its place in his closet and closing the door in case his mom or
someone came upstairs.
"Yeah Mom!" Dustin called. "Me and Gordon are in my room."
"So what were you saying about Madame Thesherly?" Gordon said quietly.
"Didn't she used to be some kind of fortune-teller or medium or something
like that?" asked Dustin.
"Oh yeah, she used to do all kinds of stuff. People think she's crazy
now. Do you remember a few years ago when all of those kids disappeared
and then the cops found all those body parts in Opal Creek?"
Dustin definitely remembered. It had been about four years ago. Twelve
children had disappeared in the space of three months and no one knew what
had happened. They lived in a small town in the middle of nowhere, and
things like that just didn't happen, so naturally it had been big news.
Then they had that huge police investigation searching for the kids, and
found all those limbs in Opal Creek. Dustin had been around eight or
nine, something like that, and his mother hadn't let him watch the news,
but he'd heard more than enough about it to give him nightmares.
"Yeah, I remember." he said, shuddering slightly at the memory. "But what
does that have to do with Madame Thesherly?"
Gordon looked incredulous. "I thought everyone knew about it." he said.
"Well, I don't." said Dustin, getting irritated.
"Well, about a year before all of that happened, Madame Thesherly was
giving free palm-readings and telling fortunes, and Joe Marvell and his
daughter Abby went to see her about something. And Joe said that when
Madame Thesherly saw Abby, she went into some kind of weird trance and
told him that Abby wasn't going to live much longer, and she told him all
about what was going to happen. Joe was really angry and Abby was scared,
so they left. And Abby was the first to disappear."
Dustin shuddered again. "So ... do you think she'll know what to do with
the rat or if it's cursed?"
"Well, she can definitely tell the future and stuff, so it's worth a try."
So the next day after school, Gordon and Dustin went to see Madame
Thesherly. They were walking along Opal Creek when Gordon happened to
gaze to the left. He gasped. "What?" asked Dustin.
Gordon couldn't speak. Dustin turned in the direction Gordon was looking.
And there, floating in Opal Creek, was ...
