Brian,
Another thought comes to mine. Since
VictorReader Pocket that is installed as part
of KeySoft is based on the VictorReader Soft,
why won't RFB and D treat it like VR Soft?
And RFB and D does not have to worry about
supporting BrailleNote family of products:
all users need to do is load the title and
enter their own pin number. And that's it,
no other step, period.
Another thought: Why did HumanWare added USB
CD-ROM support? Because they are preparing
for DAISY books on CD, including those
produced by RFB and D. If it is indeed
supported, then we have rights to read RFB
and D books using KeyBook. This is the
feature that many Americans want; this is the
feature that many students need these days;
and this is the feature that many people on
the list and others had requested for over
the last few months. My ultimate argument is
this: once RFB and D agrees to implement
their encryption to KeySoft, then it would be
a matter of time before many people will
benefit from this feature. I think we should
start a web petition on this list and other
lists regarding support for RFB and D books
on the BrailleNote family of products. I
firmly stand and believe that one day, RFB
and D will realize that they are doing a
favor and benefiting many people by
implementing RFB and D DAISY book support on
BrailleNote family of products.
Thanks for your considerations.

Subject: [Braillenote] RFB and D Support
Ottawa Canada
Humanware is fully aware of the great desire
by American
customers to have support for RFB and D DAISY
books on the
BrailleNote family of products.
As I recall, RFB and D is agreeable at least
in principle to
this, and it is apparently just a matter of
working out the gory
details between them. Not sure how long it
will take to iron out
the wrinkles, but it is being worked on.
Historically, DAISY players that folks wanted
to make ready for
playing RFB and D DAISY books have had to be
sent to RFB and D
for a software key to be installed in the
machine's firmware. I
don't believe they require this of people
using PC software to
read their books, they send out a CD with a
software key to PC
owners.
However RFB and D DAISY book service is
presently only available
to AMERICANS! And their worst nightmare is
having one of their
DAISY books get in the hands of a foreigner.
This is because it would, according to RFB
and D, violate their
copyright agreement with the publishers of
the ink print books
they record.
Since RFB and D is presently making 4 track
audio cassettes
available of their recorded titles to
foreigners, it appears the
key issue is digitally recorded titles are
for U. S. readers
only.
In discussing this situation with a senior
official at another U.
S. library of talking books, they have
stated that they have
personally read the actual law passed by
Congress, and do not
interpret anything in it as treating
recordings on digital media
differently than analog recordings on audio
cassette.
However RFB and D's lawyers have advised them
differently and to
cover their collective butts, RFB and D has
chosen to restrict
its digital recordings to just Americans.
Probably the main reason why RFB and D
requires its American
members to key in a four-digit pass code each
time they go to
listen to an RFB and D DAISY recording is
that by doing so, the
member acknowledges they have read and
understood the borrower
agreement for these books and the
restrictions that go along with
it.
Is RFB and D justified in putting
restrictions on its digital
collection? Well they think they are and
until and unless
someone more learned in the law of Copyright
than their own legal
counsel can convince them otherwise, they
will continue to do so.
So if you are a foreigner and want digital
recordings of RFB and
D titles, either buy your own fully-equipped
digital recording
studio, or a good OCR program and scanner for
a fast pc with an
option to produce DAISY files from the
scanned and OCR-ed text.
Happy reading.
Brian
