Alex,
1. Yes, the whole image of the KeySoft
System Disk, as well as new files that are
installed on the Flash Disk, are stored on
this image file.
2. This is because of the update method that
was availible at that time. CE 2.12 does not
allow burning the whole image onto ROM.
Windows CE 3.0 and above supports burning
onto the ROM.
3. No, it will not work. Although most
PDA's that are produced after June 2005 uses
X-Scale PXA27X processors, it will not work
since BrailleNote uses certain hardware and a
custom interface which does not use screen.

Subject: re: [Braillenote] Reflashing BN
That makes sense, mostly. So all the .mp3,
wav, .exe, dll, .2bp
(and so on) files are stored in this one .bin
file as binary
code? Is that why it is so huge?
As far as upgrading CE, if it is that easy
why does HW have to go
through so much to get us new CE versions? CE
5 has been out for
1 (or is it 2) years now but we have heard
nothing about it.
What would happen, since they are all binary
files, if you put
the .bin file for KS7.2 on a standard CE 4.2
device and reflashed
it to write that KS image? Would the PDA
accept it, or "fry"
itself? Sorry this is getting a bit off
topic, but thanks for the
explanation.
Have a great day,
Alex

Subject: [Braillenote] Reflashing BN
Alex and list,
I have changed the subject to reflect the
content.
Reflashing means that you are writing an
image file onto a device eddong. if you say,
"I'm reflashing your BIOS," that generally
means that you are installing an image of
BIOS onto the computer. Same thing happens
with the BrailleNote.
The so called "image" generally holds the
file structure of a device such as
BrailleNote. This file is generally a binary
file. This makes it hard to interpret these
images, since these files are written using
binary code. These image files are often
called "disk image" by programmers because it
has the exact image of a disk structure of a
target device such as files, folders and
other attributes. These "image" files has
the extension of disbin or disrom. In this
context, since you are using these binary
files to upgrade the BN, you are indeed,
effectively, reflashing your BrailleNote.
A typical process goes like this:
NOTE: This process applies to BrailleNote
mPower. It may vary from one model to
another. PLEASE USE IT AT YOUR OWN RISK!
Let us pretend that you want to upgrade your
BrailleNote from KeySoft 7.2 to 8.0 (you'll
need your product key installed):
1. Initial setup: After pressing Reset with
dots 4-5 (j-k), the Bootloader will launch
itself and select number 1 option (Update
KeySoft).
2. Image extraction and verification: Then
the Bootloader will check the image location
to see if it is safe to extract the image
from the location (in this case, sd card).
BrailleNote says, "Loading." If there's a
problem, BrailleNote will pause and give an
error meisage.
3. Image deletion: After initial extraction
is complete, the Bootloader deletes previous
image that is stored on the KeySoft System
Disk. BrailleNote displays, "Erasing." This
is necessary in order for the "new image" to
take its plaƔe.
4. Image transfer: After deletion is
complete, the Bootloader will then transffer
the newly extracted image onto KeySoft System
Disk. BrailleNote displays, "Writing." This
will install the new image on the KeySoft
System Disk.
5. Completion: After all of these setup have
been completed, the Bootloader will restart
the system in order for the new image to run.
Because of this, you can reflash your
BrailleNote. Theoretically, you can upgrade
from one version of the Windows CE to
another.
I hope this information may help you. If
anyone has any questions, feel free to write
to me off list, or contact me at Skype at
joslee22590.
