Thanks to all who did try to help me with this problem. It was a bad
modem as Mickey suggested, and we determined this by using the exact
settings from another Braille Note user's Earthlink account which
worked on his unit just fine. When these exact settings were input
into my student's unit, the same result I have been having over the
past couple of days occurred--the unit dialed, the modem squalled,
the note taker said "connected" and sat for about 30 seconds and then
disconnected never trying to log in at all. The email account on my
student's unit worked great with the use of a wireless card, but
since she will be traveling a lot and exposed to a lot of different
connection types, we believe the modem needs to be fixed. So, we
concluded modem difficulties and RMA has been requested.
Thanks again. that's the great effect of this list--when it works
right you have the benefit of all of the cumulative experience and
knowledge people have acquired.

I used to have an earthlink account and accessed it with dialup and
had no unusual settings. I didn't have to use any additional in it
strings. I left almost everything at the default setting with
"wait for dial tone" set to yes. The only thing I can think of that
you might check is the "log onto network" option. I almost always
set that to no, but you might try setting it to yes just as an
experiment.
And yes, if you can connect wirelessly, your email account settings
should be fine. And it really doesn't sound like you're getting
that far anyway.
This is pretty obvious, but how is the quality of the phone line?
Also, if the connection existed under connectivity prior to doing a
software upgrade on MPower, it might be a good idea to delete the
old one and start from scratch. For some reason, I've seen some
connection configurations become corrupted and don't know why, but
deleting and starting over can sometimes fix it.
You've probably already tried all of this, but that's about all I
can suggest at the moment.
