Kendell and list,
I know what's causing it: read the following
paragraphs because it explains a lot about
this (If someone has experienced this issue
as well, read this post):
Yes, mPower is USB 2.0 compliant. Many
people think that USB 2.0 operates at 480
MBPS (60 MB/SEC), but it is NOT true. These
devices that operate at this speed is called
USB 2.0 "high speed" devices. USB 2.0
normally operate at "full speed" that is
significantly slower than high speed. If a
USB 2.0 high speed device encounters a USB
2.0 port that only supports full speed
devices, then it will only operate at full
speed, degrading its performance. (Andy, can
you clarify whether mPower has either high
speed or full speed USB ports?) This is
common with older USB 2.0 ports. So it is ok
if the device performs sluggishly on a USB
port - this port might only support full
speed devices.
FAT (known as FAT16 in technical
documentations) and FAT32 share same
philosophy, but FAT32 is known to be a bit
slower than FAT. Anything above 4 GB
requires FAT32. This is another factor why
USB devices above 4 GB are quite slower than
devices below 2 GB.
I recommend the following:
1. When copying large files, it is best to
use your PC to do it. If you have a card
reader that accepts SD cards, then use this
method to copy files onto your USB flash
drive. It is more faster than using
BrailleNote to do it.
2. Copying multiple files using BrailleNote
is an idea that I'm against. Two reasons:
one, because USB devices use a considerable
amount of battery power, and second, this
takes minutes and hours to just move a single
file. Kendell, on your original post, you
said that the files takes up 800 MB, correct?
If so, I highly recommend the first method -
use your PC to copy these files. It takes
about 10 to 20 minutes to copy all these
files, thereby saving 2 hours for you to play
around with your new thumb drive.
3. Some people use ActiveSync to copy their
files from their storage cards e.g. SD, CF,
etc. to their computers. Again, this is
something that I advise against, because it
can take hours to do it (especially when
using serial connection).
I hope this information may help those of you
who've experienced this and similar issues.
Regards,
Joseph

Subject: [Braillenote] why is my usb key
being so slow?
Hi list members:
I just got a PQI jumpdrive about three hours
ago from UPS. Since then I've
been trying to copy my mp3 collection onto it
from my sd card. It's been
going for three hours straight and hasn't
gotten anywhere. It's still in the
middle of copying, or so it says but there's
no way of telling how much is
being copied. I only have about 888 mb of
music, so it shouldn't take this
long, should it? Does the bn use USB 2.0?
Could it be the processor in the
mPower that causes this? The memory drive is
4 gb, if that helps any. The
little red light on the drive has been
blinking for three hours straight.
Can someone help me?
Kendell
