Keith, this is what I found, and hope some of it will help you.
You can use the audio recorder with either the internal
microphone, or an external microphone plugged into the port on
the left side of the unit. The internal microphone is positioned
inside the top left hand corner of the unit. It has an effective
range of about 30cm (1 foot).
To let the Recorder know which microphone you are going to be
using, you can specify it in the Recording options set up list,
as discussed in 16.4.2 Setting up the Audio Recorder. Bear in
mind that the internal microphone is the factory default and
therefore if you have never used nor do not intend to use, an
external microphone, there is no need to do this.
It may be necessary before recording to adjust the recording
levels, depending on factors such as the usual volume of your
voice, the default settings may be too high or low. These are
discussed in 16.4.3 Adjusting Recording levels.
16.4.1.1 External Microphone.
Your unit can record using an external microphone. The kind of
external microphone that will work with it is a low-voltage
"electret" type. Electret microphones are distinct from "dynamic"
microphones, and are readily available.
Just a quick note on external microphones - any damage to the
microphone's lead, no matter how slight, can result in a
noticeable loss of sound quality. Likewise the use of extension
leads between the microphone and the socket.
