i think the m-power must be providing some kind of phantom power to the mic from the mic socket. i say this because the best mic i've found in terms of recording level, clarity and minimum hiss is a vivanco mic. this vivanco comes with it's own power source which you plug in to the mic socket of the recording device, then plug the mic in to the mic socket on the box with the battery in it which is supplying the power. the mic will not work with the m-power if i use the provided power source but works brilliantly on its own. but if i plug it in to other recorders which i have, or an amplifier, it won't work on it's own, but only with the provided power source.
i hope i havn't woffled too much.

Hi Keith:

I think you meant to say an Electet Microphone. This is a
generic type of microphone, not a brand name.

I think an Electet microphone is also known as a capacitor
microphone, but stand to be corrected.

In general, take your unit with you when you go to the microphone
store and ask if you may try the mike you intend to buy before
you buy it.

Good luck.

Brian
