Well, I generally bash on HW, and the beginning of this post will seem
as though I'm doing it again.
I transplanted my BN last year. It returned to me in early February of
06. And, just a few weeks ago I started having issues which, it was
determined were battery issues.
HW told me there was a hardware revision in August 06 or so and that I
should send my unit in.
I'm sure glad that it broke down just under the wire!
If I hadn't, I would have had to pay so that humanware would fix a
problem they obviously knew they had, otherwise they wouldn't have
revised the hardware!

Having said that, it seems as though HW is monitoring battery issues
and revising where they can. I'm glad my issues came up just before
the warrentee was up.

don't really want a detatchable battery pack. What I would like is a
battery pack that can plug in to the adaptor plug. This way I could
have an extra boost when I need it.

Hello Eugene and list!

I think the jury is still out when it comes to the best possible solution to
what is best to have for a battery! The Pacmate use to have a replaceable
battery but they went back to the internal battery similar to what the BN
presently has. Keep in mind the Blazie style notetakers used the internal
battery which is not user replaceable. I am on the Braille Sense list and
some have had connection problems with their battery. When this happened,
their unit would sometimes go to default settings. They sometimes had to
slide a battery in twice before it would work and charge properly. Of
course, someone with a Braille Sense could buy an extra battery to be sure
but one must find a way to keep it charged or alternate between the two
batteries. I think having a good battery connection plus minimizing the
chance of massive lost data is the issue here. The braille sense also has a
backup internal battery which functions when the larger outside battery is
removed. What happens when that backup internal battery system fails? You
could easily lose your data. You'd probably need to send it in to have the
internal battery backup system replaced. Whenever a notetaker uses memory
for storing data, this storage system is volatile! People have lost data
for no apparent reason! Luckily, this has improved over the years. One
should back up their data from time to time. The engineers at Humanware
apparently feel the battery system they now use is the best way to keep down
data loss! If the battery were to be changed, this would be a hardware
change. The original battery in my classic unit almost made it to three
years. I don't feel you have much to worry about. I believe you will get
good use out of your battery before you need to send it in. A replaceable
battery for the other unit is over a hundred dollars so does it really make
much difference? It's that old saying that the other man's grass always
looks greener. Perhaps someone from Humanware can comment on this but this
is my take on the subject. I don't feel Humanware is intending to make our
lives miserable! They probably feel they have the best battery system going
for now!
