Hi Lori, You wrote: Hi everyone, I'm trying to help my student get her Mpower connected via wireless. After a long time we have figured out that we can't do it at school because of the School uses a router that supports only 802.1 G and the BrailleNote uses 802.1B. Anyway, when we try it at my student's house (who has wireless) we sometimes can get it to locate a web page and alot of times can. Many times it will find the APH website but then not find another one like yahoo or google. It seems we lose connection alot. Any ideas?? Thanks
I'm going on a hunch here, and it might be a long shot. If there are other wireless networks in the vicinity which operate on the same frequency, you could have problems getting and staying connected. The situation that I'm talking about is not unlike what used to happen in the old days of cordless phones, where another cordless phone user might be operating on the same frequency, in which case you either couldn't get a dial tone or somebody would step on your signal in the middle of a call, effectively disconnecting you. I set up a wireless network at my girlfriend's place a couple of years ago and recently her daughter was complaining about connection problems or being bumped off an online session. We looked into it and found out that an upstairs neighbor had set up his wireless network using an identical router, a Linksys WRT54G. By default, the router uses a certain frequency or channel, as the router calls it, and you have the option to choose among several different ones. So I went in and tweaked the configuration, switching the operating channel and it now works like a champ and the connection is, by all accounts, much more stable. The only bummer is that I set it up for WPA, not knowing that I couldn't get in with my BrailleNote. Using WEP, it seems, was far too shaky, as the connections were always up and down. I always take a Socket CF card and some spare CAT5 cable down there so I can go hardwired if I want to, but I may have to revisit that issue soon. I hope this helps you. If not, let us know or drop me a line privately off-list and we'll see what we can do. Best of luck, Tom ___ Replies to this message will go directly to the sender.
