Ottawa Canada Hello Michael:
You will need the new version of KeySoft, 7.5 with its SSL support I think to use your Gmail account with your BrailleNote. If you have a wireless card for the BrailleNote you can have the convenience and portability of using it wirelessly, although this does drain the battery faster than using the unit with a wired-in Ethernet connection. Refer to the User Guide, chapter 13 I think it is regarding connecting the BrailleNote to the Internet and you'll find plenty of help on the list if you run into problems. My discount long distance provider includes unlimited calls to the United Kingdom so if you wish, I can walk you through the more fiddly and troublesome bits by telephone. I mostly use my BrailleNote for its planner as I seem to collect doctor appointments these days. My ISP requires SSL support for e-mail so at present I can't use my BrailleNote for e-mail and since I get over a hundred messages a day I would probably utterly overwhelm it with the volume of e-mail. But when I get 7.5 I do plan to use it for mail as it is highly portable, much more so than my seven-year old laptop with its fifteen inch LCD screen. At present I seldom use the word processor and addressbook of the BrailleNote although it is handy for making little short notes when I'm on the go. Have tried using the book reader function of the unit but it didn't seem to want to work with DAISY audio recorded magazines from the CNIB here in Canada. Hopefully 7.5 will solve this problem. While the BrailleNote does have its limitations, it is rather powerful and versatile for its size and of course it has a built-in Braille display which is nice for situations where you want to use it without disturbing others.
