Hi there,
There was a talk in 2004 about replacing the
battery. According to former BrailleNote
support staff late Dean Jackson, it is not a
good idea to implement it due to voltage and
mishandling of the battery. I feel that if
users want it, then it is a good idea to
suggest this to someone like Matthew, Maurice
and others. And yes, PAC Mate Original (not
X and Omni; that is, BNS and TNS) had
external batter pack on the back. Sorry for
bringing the competition again.
Cheers,
Joseph

replacement
Dear Peter,
I'm sure everyone agrees cleaning and
servicing should be done by a
HumanWare expert.
The thing many people find objectionable is
the need to send a unit in to
replace the battery. People would like to
see the BN re-designed so it uses
an external battery pack the user can replace
himself or herself. This
isn't too much to ask. The old Keynote
Companions and Braille Companions
had external battery packs. The competition,
Braille Sense, has an external
battery. Other braille displays like the
Braille Star, Braille Wave,
EasyBraille and Braillino have external
battery packs. I can't remember if
the PacMate has an external battery pack or
not.
If HumanWare would just come out with an
external auxiliary battery pack
people could connect the BN to, that would
help immensely to fill the bill.
But if HumanWare wants to stay ahead of the
competition, they will have to
re-design the BN so a slide out battery pack
could be used.

I've been surprised and disappointed at the
anxed, outrage, negativity and
Criticism of Humanware because they want to
replace the battery in the
Braille Note.
Surely when one spends close to $10'000
Australian on a piece of equipment
you'd want to make sure that a person who is
trained expertly in the area
of Braille Note maintenance is the one
working on it! To have the
opportunity to have the unit cleaned and
serviced is surely going to
contribute to the optimal use of such a
product to Humanware's valued
client?
Comparing changing the battery in the
Braille Note to that in a mobile
phone, (cell phone) surely emphasises how
proposterous this way of
thinking is!
