The Braille Sense is slightly larger than the BNMP, but then again the one I saw had a DSl port and VGA port, plus other things the BN does not have. As far as the hardware upgrade, maybe they could bundle it with a bunch of other stuff (WIFI, DSL, stereo mic, a bigger flash disk/processor, and so on) to make it more worth the money. Those features are just my personal requests, BTW. I am not saying it would be easier to afford, but once one could it would give them more features than just a different battery. I am not sure why HT abandoned an idea I heard of back in 2003 or 2004: a battery that can be charged independantly and plugged into the AC adapter port of the BN to act as another power supply. I see some issues with this (closing the case, keeping the battery plugged in during over-the-shoulder use...) but it seems like a better solution than reworking the entire BN.

Have a great day,
Alex

I don't believe that the unit would have to be larger and
heavier. I
have seen the Braille Sense from GW-Micro via HIMS, and it is no
larger
than the Braillenote and it is certainly not heavier.
However, it would mean that we would have to pay again for a
hardware
upgrade, and I know I can't afford it at this time.

Subject: [Braillenote] The Battery

Hi List:

This discussion is interesting but has avoided a most important
factor. To upgrade to a unit with a user replaceable battery
would require a complete re-working of the unit architecture.
We would need to change our mPowers in for a newer unit.

Myself, I would certainly enjoy having a slide in battery, but
this time I could not justify the cost in time and money. In
addition it would seem to me that such a unit would be larger and
heavier - sacrifices that I would not be happy to make.
