Ottawa Canada

First, I want to thank the folks at Humanware for what at first
glance appears to be an excellent, stable and relatively bug-free
new release of KeySoft, that is 7.50 released for public download
earlier today.

We muttered, grumbled, used your good name in vain and wondered
where the Beef was, but it seems KS 7.50 build 17 is worth
waiting for!

Thank you for living with our pent-up excitement and
anticipation.

I have just successfully installed the upgrade on my BrailleNote
Mpower QT 32. I ran into some snags and called Tech Support in
Concord, California for help.

I spoke with Greg in Tech Support and he walked me through some
parts not explicitly clear in the installation instructions
posted to the web.

Thank you very much Greg for patiently walking me through the
update process!

Here are the snags I ran into:

1. Very important!

Do not perform back-to-back resets unless the unit has displayed
and/or spoken the Main Menu prompt.

When it has taken you back to the main menu, the reset has
completely run its cycle and successfully started KeySoft.

Doing a reset again before the previous reset has returned you to
the main menu prompt can lock-out the boot loader which is run
when the unit is reset because it thinks it may be in an infinite
loop. When the boot loader has been locked out, your unit must
be returned to a Humanware Service Depot for some things to be
done to it by a technician so that the boot loader can again be
executed.

OK things not made clear in the installation instructions:

2. When you do the dots 4-6 (j-l on a QT) reset, press and hold
down these keys until you hear the five ascending tones.

You may press the keys before you press the reset button.

However, only press the reset button momentarily, e. g. press
then immediately release it, as if you hold it in for any length
of time, your unit may do a plain reset, not execute the
eboot.bin file on the SD card.

3. Similarly, when the boot loader has finished running, press
and hold down dots 4-5 (J-K on a QT) until you hear the several
tones, but only momentarily press and immediately release the
reset button.

Holding the reset button in for any length of time may result in
the unit doing a plain reset (reset button only, no keys held
down).

When you hear the tones that signal the beginning of the update
process, release all keys and let your unit just sit and update
itself, and do not interrupt the AC power to it, switch it off or
reset it or press any keys until the updating process is
completed.

My unit gracefully started KeySoft 7.50 build 17 all by itself,
without me needing to do any resets at the end of the updating
process. Yours may require you to do a reset, and if it doesn't
tell you what kind of reset to perform, do a simple or plain
reset by just pressing the reset button when you are prompted to
do so.

It is best to keep guide dogs, cats, children of all ages and
even yourself a respectable distance away from your unit while it
is updating. Ideally, everyone and everything except you should
be in another room and told you are not to be disturbed except
for a life and death emergency, like a child that is seriously
injured, dinner has caught fire on the stove or the dog and cat
are having a serious disagreement as to who really owns the dog
bed or cat's bed.

Enjoy your updated unit!

Please let us on [email protected] know your success
or failure in updating your unit.

Oh! Note that after you do the dots 4-6 (J-L) reset to start the
boot loader, and are at the update menu, probably version 1.5,
press "b" on a BT keyboard, or the digit 2 on a QT keyboard!

I was trying to type "B" on my QT keyboard and getting nowhere!

I think this point is mentioned in the installation instructions
on the web.

I apologize for the cross-posting, but as these are very
important and baffling points if you don't know them, I wanted to
get the message out to as many BrailleNote and VoiceNote owners
as possible quickly.

Have a great Labor Day Weekend if you are in Canada or the USA.
