Joseph,
Some operating systems have trouble handling memory
correctly. Apparently, KeySoft is one of them. I
have noticed that, in Windows, some programs forget to
free up memory when they close, thereby resulting in
less memory being available. If KeySoft had a "free up
memory" option somewhere, that would be good.

Subject: [Braillenote] Is something wrong with IE and
Virtual Memory usageunder KS7.5?
Hi folks and Jonathan,
I've just found another glitch with memory handling:
whenever a
user exits KeyWeb, the RAM usage does not decrease to
the point
before the user first opened KeyWeb after reseting a
BrailleNote.
This means that, for example, the virtual memory usage
was
approx. 56% after reseting a BrailleNote. The User
opens
KeyWeb, and as soon as it opens, the memory usage jumps
to about
70%. After a user opens a site, the usage is about
80%. After a
user exits KeyWeb and returns to Main Menu, the virtual
usage
does not drop to 56% (rather, it dromps only to 70%(.
First, I've reseted my BrailleNote and checked the
memory usage
(Options/Support Info Mode/Memory command; SPACE with i
or READ
plus i). It reported virtual memory usage of 52%
(about 16.4 MB)
and physical memory usage of 22% (about 6.7 MB). Then
I chose
Internet option from Main Menu (KeyWeb) and checked
memory value
and this time it reports virtual memory usage of 68%
(roughly 23
MB) and physical memory usage of about 27% (about 9
MB). Then I
chose to open a website (such as KeyWeb homepage
provided by
HumanWare) and checked the memory usage again. This
time it
showed virtual memory usage of 81% (ab25.7 MB) and
physical
memory usage of 29% (about 9.4 MB). Then I exited
KeyWeb and
returned to Main Menu (past Address prompt) and the
memory value
shows virtual memory usage of 70% (roughly 25.7 MB) and
physical
memory usage of 25% (8 MB). Then I repeated this
procedure:
starting KeyWeb, checking memory value, opening a
website,
checking memory value, exiting KeyWeb and checking
memory value.
After several trials, I discovered that when I'm in
Main Menu,
the memory usage for virtual memory and pccysical
memory shows
70% and 25%, respectively. In other words, the
unnecessary
memory is not reclaimed after exiting IE.
There are numerous consequences because of this
behavior:
* In the long run, when both KeyMail and KeyWeb are
running and
when a user attempts to send and receive email, either
"the
specified file cannot be found" or "out of memory"
error will
occur.
* If KSWMedia (Media Player) is run on top of KeyWeb
and KeyMail,
the virtual memory usage will jump all the way to 98%
even though
physical memohy usage is 40%. In this case, I can
understand
that the media file in question is stored in virtual
memory
because of its large size, but it may cause performance
issues
such as lock-ups and poor responsiveness.
Any thoughts on this memory issue?
Another question related to this: back in April and May
of 2006,
there was a huge debate on this list regarding
KyoungSoft and
memory usage. Andrew Riden, a software developer at
HumanWare at
that time wrote that "... it seems that IE is getting
confused
about something. ...". Do you have ady opinions on why
IE gets
confused (is it confused of resource or memory
handler?)? If it
is memory issue, then is there a solution besides OS
upgrade?
Thanks for considerations.
Cheers,
Joseph P.S. Hope this post was "not too techie."
