Oh wow, I didn't realize you could open multiple files in both Keyword and
Keybook. Thanks for sharing this, greatly appreciated! I also was not aware
that I could have a "recent files list" when opening a document. It's
amazing what you learn on this list isn't it? Anyway thanks again, greatly
appreciated!

Subject: RE: [BrailleNote] BrailleNote Classic

Hi Anne

The BrailleNote Classic is the original BrailleNote to go on the market and
has been superseded by the BrailleNote MPower (which looks like a Classic
but has more ports and card slots) and the PK (which is about a third of the
size and weight of the other two). The classic is still a really good
machine and can be upgraded all the way up to the current software release
(although this is the last upgrade for the classic). But if you are running
an old software version (especially below 4.02), it would be cheaper to
transplant your braille display into an MPower. That is if you wish to
upgrade of course.

It is possible to transfer files from the BrailleNote onto the PC. The best
and most reliable way is to buy a compact flash card, transfer files onto
that from either the BrailleNote or PC and slot it into the other machine.
You will need a card reader for the PC and a PCMCIA (I think) to compact
flash card converter for the BrailleNote. The more techy people on this list
can recommend good cards, readers and converters.

The other way to transfer files across is through ActiveSync, which sends
files through the serial port directly to the computer. I've never had any
success with this method however as it requires a lot of fiddling around
trying to make a connection between the BrailleNote and PC. But again, many
people on this list seem to have had success and can explain how to do it.

The BrailleNote comes with a function whereby you can convert braille
documents into many different formats, including MS Word, plain text and
Rich Text formats. You will need to "export" files through this function for
them to be recognised on the PC. Step by step instructions can be found in
the user guide index under "translation options", or the table of contents
under "file manager".

It is also possible to jump quickly from one document to another. In Keyword
or Keybook, press space with dots 1-2-5-6 (OU) on the Braille keyboard. If
you have a qwerty keyboard I don't know the command. This will take you to
the "document to open" prompt, and if you are jumping between just two files
you can press enter. You can cycle through the list of most recently opened
files by pressing space with dots 5-6 at the "document to open" prompt, and
pressing enter when the desire file is displayed. This is in addition to the
conventional methods for selecting files and folders which I am sure you
already know.

Similarly, you can jump quickly between applications by pressing enter with
backspace with the initial letter of the application. So, to get from
keyword to the address list, press enter with backspace with A. And to get
back to keyword, press enter with backspace with W. The BrailleNote will
take you back to exactly where you were before jumping out of the
application, unless you exit to the main menu at any time. Then you will
have to reopen files and address and planner entries when you go back into
the desired applications.

If you have large blocks of text in one file that you want inserted into
another, there is a whole suite of commands in the block commands menu
(space with B) that allows you to that. You can also copy phone numbers or
addresses directly into the appropriate fields in the address list. You can
find instructions under "block commands topics" in the index.

Good luck!
Kylie

Subject: [Braillenote] Braillenote Classic

Hi All

Thank you so much for your help. I think I have the Braille Note Classic so
does that mean I can't transfer files from BN to PC?

I was using it in work today, getting all my numbers put onto it and one
thing I wondered, is there a quicker way of moving from one file to another
instead of going through all the menus again? I'm assuming there's no quick
way of doing this and it'll take a bit of time to get used to it. Is my
machine really old fashioned then guys? There is a parallel port on the bak
of the machine and I got leads for a printer, I also got a phone cable for
the net and e-mail but I wouldn't be using that.

What I was hoping to do is Braille stuff out on the BN then send it via
e-mail on the PC. If my machine can do this, I would probably need to
convert the Braille into text format first? Sorry, I'm going back to the
days of the Braille N Speak, it was what I've been used to and these BN
machines are so advanced, even so, I think it's a great piece of kit.

Once again, thanks for all your help.
