Hi All,

Some of you on the Mobile Speak Smartphone list will recognize this as a
repeat message; however, seeing as I posted about this on the BN list
originally, I figured I would post my updated message here as well:

Subject: HTC S630 and BrailleNote Bluetooth dial-up networking again

Hi again All,

You might recall I posted a link to a web site where there are articles
about
the Bluetooth dial-up networking being removed from Windows Mobile 5 AKU3
and Windows Mobile 6 devices. I also referred to some sort of hack that was
available for Windows Mobile Professional devices, but not Windows Mobile
Standard Smartphone devices.

Well, in checking that same site today:

http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&title=one_of_the_best_hacks_of_the_year_dial_u&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1#comments

they apparently have linked to a site that has now improved that referred to
hack. The fix is also supposed to work with Windows Mobile Standard devices
now,
and is supposed to be just one CAB file that you download and then run on
your Windows Mobile 5 or 6 device.

So, realizing that there are always risks with this type of file, of course
I had to try this on my HTC S630. And, it did install and work as
advertised,
as I was able to use my HTC phone as a modem via Bluetooth for my
BrailleNote PK. But, as I've since come to expect, this worked only for
using the phone as a modem for the BN, but it in no way allowed me to create
a com port on the device to then use my BN as a Braille display for the
phone.

Also, just for the fun of it, I then tried to see if I could remove this
hack from my phone. However, reverting back to the backup I had done
earlier this afternoon before installing the fix, didn't take away the
ability for me to use the phone as a modem. And, still further, when I went
into Sprite and told it to replace rather than merge system files when doing
the restore, I got a message saying the restore failed and that the system
files couldn't be updated--I know I got the failed message, and I think
updated was the word used in regards to the system files.

However, being
persistent in wanting to see if I could now make the modem service go away
on my phone, I performed a hard reset. And, that did indeed eliminate the
phone offering the dial-up networking option to the BN. Although, it took
me several tries to figure out just how to get the restore process started
using the Sprite Backup Manager on the PC, as guess I wasn't sure just what
was showing up on my phone screen after the hard reset. But, I think I
finally got
everything back to where it was just before I installed that hack, and I of
course have saved the file itself for likely future use.
