Subject: RE: [Braillenote] VoiceNote can't do WPA wireless
security
Ottawa Canada
Dear Graham and list:
Humanware would probably be the first to openly state the
BrailleNote/VoiceNote family of products are a PDA, and not a
replacement for a full blown laptop or desktop computer.
This is because these units use a mobile processor, not a regular
PC processor, and have to have a reasonable amount of battery
life and be as compact and light as possible.
So they do offer some wireless and Ethernet connectivity, and for
many people this is adequate. But it is true they don't support
WPA security and until version 7.5 build 20, didn't even support
SSL!
Unfortunately there's only so much functionality you can stuff
into a little, portable, battery powered device.
When purchasing a notetaker, PDA or laptop or a desktop for that
matter, it is very important that you look at what the unit can
do, what you need, and if it completely, mostly, or really
doesn't meet your present and anticipated needs.
I don't work for Humanware, and am not trying to put words in
their mouth, I'm just speaking as a reasonably seasoned veteran
PC, CP/M before it, and mainframe and minicomputer user before
that.
I do hope you find your VoiceNote a valuable tool in your
everyday life. I heavily use the planner in mine and would be
lost without it. I don't normally use it for e-mail or surfing
the web, and only occasionally use the word processor. The
scientific calculator is pretty darned handy by the way.
It also can give me the time of day and day of the year, although
I usually already know what day it is.
Take care.
Brian
