If it's been that long since you used your unit for e-mail, perhaps you haven't changed the SMTP to smtpauth.earthlink.net

About a year or two ago, Earthlink announced that this would be necessary. Look in your directory of services and see if you have that for your SMTP server, and if not, change it, and you should be able to send again.

Earthlink Technical Support "blames" this on Humanware which I find hard to
believe.
