Ottawa Canada Dear Greg, Terri and list:
Well not all of the world uses inches for formatting. Typesetters, printers and editors use Points, there are 72 Points per inch. A Pica typewriter uses 12 point type, 6 lines per vertical inch and sets 10 characters per horizontal inch. Agate, the typeface of the want ads sets 28 characters per inch. These are for mechanical (fixed) spacing. Proportional fonts put more narrow letters like an "I" per inch and fewer fat letters (M, W etc) per horizontal inch but they are all the same height. In much of the world, they use centimeters or millimeters for margins etc. So it isn't just a matter of adding inches to the format choices! I've actually seen an editor tell his typesetter to move something up or down a quarter of a hair and to a printer, I think there are 4 hairs per Point! Now that is being picky! But its how books, flyers and newspapers are made to look visually very nice. Brian Brian K.
