If you are a member of Talking Book Topics which is a service from the
Library of Congress. You can sign up to download and play audio books that
they converted from tapes to digital format. The only bad thing if you sign
up with the digital audio from Library of Congress the books will only work
with their own player or the Victor Stream Reader.
Another place that you can download books for free and play on any mp3
player, DAISY player, or on the BrailleNote family is librivox.com
