Dear Bob and list:

Very true about replying to private mail being best done
privately.

As a general rule, what people send to you in private
correspondence should remain private. This is a courtesy to the
author of the correspondence and is in keeping with how postal
mail is treated.

Topics raised on a list should be replied to on list if of
general interest, but say detailed discussion of a particular
problem or situation one particular list member has should be
done privately as the list doesn't care about the gory details.

If you and the person with the problem are able to resolve it,
then certainly post the solution to the list as this is of
general interest.

Take care.
