Hi Alex,
Thanks for the correction - another side effect about my fast typing speed. Yes, you need to have Eloquence as the synthesizer (explanation is in the list archives).
Cheers,
Joseph P.S.Sorry about it.

All good points, but you must use Eloquence on an mpower, not
kng, and an mpower is the only unit on which changing alarm
sounds will work.

Have a great day,
Alex

Subject: [Braillenote] Answers to recent questions

Hi folks,
Here are some of the answers to recent questions:
1. Alarms: there is a way to change the alarm sound from default
beeps with the following conditions:
* You need to prepare two wav files (no longer than three to five
seconds each).
* You need to use KeyNote Gold as your synthesizer (for mPower
units).
Copy the two wav files to KeySoft System Disk/Windows folder.
Rename the first file to "keysoft alarm1" and the osr to "keysoft
alarm2." When you are done, just reset your unit. The next time
you set your alarm, the new sounds should be played. This same
theory holds for other wav files - you can copy even Windows
sounds onto the BrailleNote and rename it to the sound you want
to hear. For instance, you can change the "startup" sound to
hear XP startup sound (in case of mine).
2. Braille display intensity: due to dardware reasons, there is
no noticeable difference for newer cells (KGS cells with plastic
buttons) regardless of what intensity setting you are using.
There is difference of braille sensitivity when you have Tieman
cells, distinguished by the presence of rubber touch cursor
buttons.
3. Stereo recording: this is, unfortunately, the mic's fault:
you cannot record ANYTHING in stereo (even the FM Radio) because
the microphone is mono. Even though the source is stereo, if the
input jack is mono, there's no way to reproduce stereo output
unless you use advanced audio editor such as Sound Forge or
GoldWave.
4. Size of audio files: those who are into podcasting would
recognize this; the size of the audio depends on the setting you
choose - the better the recording quality, more space is needed
(I need to come up with a prediction equation for this). The
user guide should tell you the predicted amount of disk space
usage for audio files under different settings (see Chapter 19 on
the mPower manual for more information).
5. Car stereo: there are some car models out there that has a
speaker cord. This means that one can plug a headphone cord onto
the BrailleNote and have the music on the BN played on the stereo
(don't ask me about specific car models though).
6. Jump to time: if one has a braille display, one can simply
use the touch cursor to jump to a specific position (not custom
position though, but I think this "jump to time" would be useful
for many of us).
7. MobileSpeak and ghrlNote: you can type using Grade 2 when
using MobileSpeak in conjuction with BrailleNote. You can type
in Grade 2 in Word Mobile or any other text editors. When the
word has been typed using contracted braille, after pressing
SPACE, MobileSpeak automatically translates the word into
computer braille.
8. Email problem: there might be a possibility of:
* A character, now identified as a control character might have
been inserted at the end of the email address.
* You might have typed the address incorrectly.
* There might be something wrong with SMTP settings e.g. setting
authentication to no when it should have been yes, wrong SMTP
server address, etc.
As someone suggested, we need more information to get a fair
picture of what's going on - after all, this is the first steps
for proper investigation. Once a HumanWare staff said that, if
someone has a prinblem, one should describe the general
description of the problem and the steps to reproduce it. Then
the "experts" would be able to ask further questions depending on
the situation and may help the user solve the problem.
These are the answers and my general remarks on recent questions.
Cheers,
Joseph
