Hi all, here's a little thing I've been working on, forwarded from my other account.
---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Bob Cavanaugh <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Mon, 16 Jun 2008 07:35:15 -0700 Subject: extra manual for the bn To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] 1. Things not documented in the regular manual This section provides some information that is not included in the manual that was provided with your BrailleNote. 1.1 searching for files It is possible to search all drives and directories on your BrailleNote. The following instructions should be followed EXACTLY: 1. Navigate to the Utilities menu and selectar "application program". 2. At the "drive?" prompt, press K (for Keysoft system disk". 3. Select the Windows directory (press enter on Windows and press enter again to select the subdirectory). 4. At the program name? prompt, select cmdddexe. 5. You see "command line?". Type the textar in quotes, but without the quotes: "stk dir sts filenameddext greater-than searchddtxt". Replace "filenameddext" with the filename you want to find (such as "mydocddkwb"). 6. Now open Keyword. Select the keysoft system disk, then the none folder. Navigate to "searchddtxt" (which can be any filename you wanted, as long as it is a text file) and open it. You will see a new line followed by "directory of" then a directory name of a file. If the file is the one you want, follow that patharar (memorize it and open it in keyword like normal). If not keep looking through the results of your searchddarar NOTES: 1. To find part of a filename or files of any type, use a *. For example: A. You want to find all ASCII text files: stk dir sts ininddtxt greater-than searchddtxt B. You want to find a file, and you know part of the filename is "science". Use: stk dir sts ininscienceininddextension C. You know the file starts with science stk dir sts scienceininddext D. You know the file's name ends with science stk dir sts ininscienceddext 2. If anything has spaces (your search string or output file) use quotes around the name. fileddext is fine, but file twoddext is not; use "file twoddext". This is because the program will take the commands as individual commands. 3. If you want to store the search results on any drive or folder you can. Just use the string below. In this example the general folder is used. stk dir sts filenameddext greater-than "\FlashDisk\General\search.txt" 1.2 Getting your BrailleNote's Mac Address To get your Mac address follow these steps, 1. Select the utilities menu from the main menu by pressing us. 2. Select application program by pressing a. 3. Select the Keysoft system disk and then the windows folder. 4. At the program name? prompt, select Mac Addressddexe. 5. At the command line prompt press enter and your Mac Address will be displayed. Note, you must have your wireless card or other method of connectivity inserted into the unit in order to retrieve your Mac Address. 1.3 how to change a system sound The following instructions are meant to be used when modifying sounds under KeySoft. This instruction applies to ALL sounds (that is, all wav files in the Windows folder of the KeySoft SystemDisk). Please be aware of the following two warnings: a. Please be aware that after modifying these sounds, the new sounds will be lost if you perform: a. DOTS 4-5-fstJKL reset. but. Service Reset (RESET with Record.) If you perform these two resets, the sounds will revert back to the factory default and you'll need to modify them again from scratch. but. Please also be aware that you are changing a system component. The author is not responsible for file corruption or other maladies resulting from misuse of these instructions. Use it at your own risk! Due to the fact that KeyNote Gold already has these sounds "embedded" -- built in -- in its engine (meaning that these instructions will not work for BrailleNote PK and Classic which only has KNG speech). These instructions work properly with BrailleNote mPower with the following conditions: a. If you have KeySoft 7.0 or higher. and/or but. If you've selected Eloquence synthesizer for speech output. How to change a System Sound Under some circumstances, you might wish to change System Sounds for convenience. For example, if you want your BrailleNote to emit sounds from your favorite movie, drama show, or in some cases, other Windows or Windows CE versions. As outlined in cautionary noteeathese sounds should be treated with care due to the fact that it might get corrupted due to misuse of these instructions. Alarms The alarm files that ship with BrailleNote are stored, like other system files, under the Windows folder on the KeySoft System Disk These can also be changed just like other system sounds. There are two files associated with alarms: Alarm1 and Alarm2. You'll need two files (equal in lendth; probably under two or three seconds) with wav extension. There are two ways to change these sounds: a. Using traditional (copy and rename) method: 1. Prepare two wav files with equal length (between two and three seconds). 2. From Main Menu, go to File Manager and select Copy. 3. Navigate to the drive and folder where you've stored these two files and press ENTER. 4. At the file prompt, press SPACE then select the first file; press ENTER. 5. At the "Destination drive" prompt, select KeySoft System Disk; at the folder name prompt, select Windows. The first file is copied. Repeat these steps for the second file. 6. Then at the File Manager menu, select Rename. 7. At the drive prompt, select KeySoftSystem Disk; at the folder name, selectWindows; at the file name, select the first file that you've copied. 8. At the "rename" prompt, type "keysoft alarm1" (without quotes) then press ENTER. Repeat these "Rename" procedure for the second file but rename this file to "keysoft alarm2" (without quotes). but. Using System Update (installing to FlashDisk first) method Under some circumstances, if the file's "last modified" date is newer than approx. 2003, you can install these two files to Flash Disk first and then update it while BrailleNote resets. 1. 5. At the "Destination drive" prompt, select Flash Disk; at the folder name prompt, select Windows. (if Windows does not exist, you'll need to create a folder called Windows under Flash Disk by either going to New Folder option (under Folder Manager) or typing it at the folder prompt.) The first file is copied. Repeat these steps for the second file. 6. Then at the File Manager menu, select Rename. 7. At the drive prompt, select Flash Disk; at the folder name, select Windows; at the file name, select the first file that you've copied. 8. At the "rename" prompt, type "keysoft alarm1" (without quotes) then press ENTER. Repeat these "Rename" procedure for the second file but rename this file to "keysoft alarm2" (without quotes). After it has completed, press Reset. At this point, KeySoft should detect that there are "new" files under FlashDiskstWindows. After a few moments, KeySoft notifies, "System files have been updated, press Reset." Press Reset. After a few moments Main Menu should appear. Again, please follow these instructions carefully. Also please don't forget the cautionary notes. 1.4 hiding and unhiding files here is how to hidestunhide files on the BN: 1. From the main menu, select utilities. 2. At the drive prompt, select KeySoft System Disk. At the folder name propt, select windows. 3. At the program name prompt, select cmdddexe 4. Type (exactly; anything in brackets [] means change to your specifications. Remember that if a path or filename has spaces it must go in quotes stc attrib [plus bar com]h path/filenameddext 5. If you type stc attrib plus h myfileddtxt you will hide myfileddtxt. Typing the same thing but with -- instead of plus will unhide files. 1.5 uploading files If you have KeySoft 7.5 or later you can now upload files to any php scripts that can upload files, such as email web interfaces. To do this click the browse button on the webpage and once you have selected the file you want go to the submit button. When browsing your Braillenote will prompt you for the drive folder and filename. Select these in the usual way. 1.6 Seeing your recently accessed files It is possible to see what files you have accessed recently. At any filename prompt press dots 5-6 and you can see the last files you accessed. If you see a document that is not in the folder that you are in, it will say in folder then the folder name. 1.7 reading html email Even though KeyMail doesn't support html emails, it is still possible to read html emails. To do this, follow these steps, 1. Download the email from your server. 2. Once you see that you have an html email, press space with so. 3. At the file name prompt select create an ascii text file and type the name of the file. You must give it an html extention. 4. Now open KeyWeb and select the file where you have stored the html email. Now you are reading the email like a web page. 2. Additional information to the manual This section provides additional information and corrections to the manual. It contains quoted material found in the user guide to go along with this information. 2.1 Note on Area Codes. It is a characteristic of Outlook that if you do not put an area code onto a phone number, it fills in the default country and area code for you, regardless of whether it is correct or not, and while you can change them, you cannot delete these codes entirely, so you have to have these codes even if the number is local. The phone number fields in KeyList do not do this, however; they simply take whatever numeric combination you type into them. This means that if a number in a KeyList record without a country and area code synchronizes to Outlook, Outlook will add the default one at the Outlook end, and the next time you synchronize, those codes will synchronize back to KeyList. However if you type a country and area code in KeyList, using a space between each code, Outlook will recognize these and sort them into the appropriate fields. For example, the number plus 1 415 8206820 in KeyList will synchronize accurately into Outlook. Note, if you are using a bt keyboard and you wish to enter these country codes, use a dot 4 before the plus sign. Otherwise, the plus sign will be translated as an ing contraction. 2.2 KeyWeb and virus protection Only HumanWare's proprietary software can run on the BrailleNote BT. KeyWeb does not limit the type of file you can download, but we strongly advise you not to try and run executables on your BrailleNote BT, including those designed to run on Windows CE. Doing this could cause irreparable damage to your BrailleNote BT and to KeySoft, and you do so at your own risk. This also means that the bn can not get a virus. 2.3 The Directory Option. To obtain information about a file, folder or drive, use the Directory option. From the File Manager menu, press D for Directory and KeySoft displays: "Drive? (Last drive used)," You can select the drive and then the folder as usual. KeySoft then displays a list of files in the selected folder. Review the list in the usual way. Let us say that you are reviewing the files in a folder, and the file name "Frank" is displayed. If you press SPACE with I, KeySoft provides information about the file. That might typically be as follows: "Braille document. Size: 945 bytes. Last modified: Saturday 24 May 2004, at 8:21 PM. Unprotected." This is what it will say if you use the uk date format. If you use the usa date format, it will say, May 24, 2004. 2.4 Printing to a file You also have the option of printing to a file. To do this follow these steps, 1. Select the print a document option from the KeyWord menu. 2. KeySoft prompts "print or setup printer?" Select setup by pressing so. 3. You are presented with the printer setup list. The option you are interested in is the printer port. The factory default is USB. Change this to file. 4. Press space with e and then p for print. KeySoft leads you through the usual steps of printing. 5. After KeySoft displays printing of file complete, open KeyWord. Select the KeySoft system disk and then the none folder. 6. Keysoft then prompts document to open? Select print to fileddtxt. What you printed is in this file.
