Good evening list
First remember the BN is a notetaker or PDA not a Pc and ask the question
why should it be a windows interface?
Indeed the BrailleSense is produced by HIMS co LTD in Korea. It has a
similar user interface to the BrailleNote but not identical. It is sort of a
cross between a PacMate and a BN but it has some very good features like
multi-tasking but its word processor is not as sophisticated as BN. I have
reviewed BN PacMate and BrailleSense (BS) for my masters thesis on a new
human computer interface model for Braille Keyboard devices.
the BN user interface has some extremely good features that set it apart
from the others.
1. consistency
2. well developed context sensitive help accessed with only one method
3. help based upon menus
4. maximum number of pieces of information a user needs to remember is 3
5. three interaction styles only - menus, prompts and short cut keys unlike
windows with multiple interaction styles requiring multiple types of context
sensitive help and therefore more than one way to access context sensitive
help depending upon which type of help is needed.
6. editing and reading commands almost identical on BN and BS means user
experience of one or other can be transferred to learning the other.
main problems with BN
1. no multi-tasking
2. poor implementation of internet access
3. outdated hardware
4. no dedicated media access keys
5. no function keys or use of fn with Braille dots to allow for function
keys
6. no single one key press to gain main menu or menu bar of application
i.e. no key that represents alt key
7. no built in LCD
await the finished thesis about July 2009.
