I completely agree, and to add to that, I would like the braille 
display to show the unicode of a character like it used to do on 
the classics; you could get to where the bn would say "alpha", 
but on the display you would see "97".  I would like this 
returned and modified so that you can see/hear the phonetic and 
the unicode, then the bn would, as John said, stay in that mode.  
Currently you have to press the character chord 3 times just to 
get into phonetic mode, and the second press is the same as the 
first, so I think it should be press1=normal, press2=phonetic, 
press3=unicode, press4=cycle back to normal.  Just my thoughts.
