I do not know how to do it, but has he tried recalibrating the battery gauge? Please, any PK users, tell us how to do this.

Subject: [Braillenote] PK battery problem. advice welcome.

Hello there, I have a friend with a PK who wonders if any may be
able to help with a problem he's having. In fact it is his
second unit, the first lasted only a few weeks before the Braille
display gave up completely. The Firm eventually changed it for a
new unit with which he was very pleased, for the sound quality,
he says, was better than the original. However, now he has
learned something about it, he expects it to join him out
working, unfortunately, he has encountered battery problems.
Even though fully charged before leaving home, the unit, within
only 2 or 3 hours is down to 50 per cent and starts giving
"battery critical" warnings. Long before finishing his work, the
power percentage is into single figures and he feels he dare not
use it. Even after the "battery critical" warnings, the unit
continues to work satisfactorily, but appears to be losing charge
far too quickly. He does keep a cf card in the machine, and
needs to for his work. He has tried all the available resets.
Has anyone any suggestions to any process he might try in order
to cure this trouble. After his initial experience, he is
understandably despondent and is contemplating trying another
Firm's unit. Personally, I have had my PK for nearly 4 years and
thankfully have not experienced anything like this.
Don Cooper.
