Hi Blake,
Actually, my last name is not Leigh (although a fine guess); it's
actually Lee (l e e).
Well, here's a question for you (I mean all of us): "Ow many
people remember all those talks about KeySoft 6.1? If you recall,
it was basically a new KeySoft running on an upgraded version of
Windows CE. Whereas previous versions of KeySoft were powered by
Windows CE 2.12, the new 6.1 upgrade was powered by Windows CE
4.2 (basis for Windows Mobile 2003). Remember what HJ (then
Pulsedata) said about the upgrade and its consequences? "The new
KeySoft will not run under present operating system, nor old
KeySoft will run on Windows CE 4.2."--Source: HumanWare. Pulse
Data Preview BrailleNote KeySoft 6.1, June 30, 2004.
In our context of upgrading from CE 4.2 to 6.0, the same
principle apply here: theoretically, one cannot use KeySoft 7.5
on Windows CE 6.0 (due to the fact that it was jritten for an
earlier OS) nor vice versa (you cannot use the next KeySoft
release on current CE version, otherwise it would break
compatibility). The last sentence in parenthesis carries a
significant, symbolic meaning in the context of BrailleNote:
BrailleNote, as well as other blindness devices, are so-called
"embedded systems." In other words, devices such as BrailleNote
running an embedded systems OS such as Windows CE would not
behave like that of laptops running under say, Windows XP.
Now, onto your question about compatibility: just because you can
use KeySoft on other OS does not mean that it will work,
particularly if the newer OS which the software is going to be
"ported" i.e. to be written so that it would work with this OS
requires both hardware and architectural deviations from what
we've used to. In simpler terms, the new KeySoft, using "old"
instructions/code, will not take advantage of new "demands"
imposed by this new Windows CE 6.0. Here are some consequences
which you could expect from upgrading from CE 4.2 to 6.0:
a. You will effectively sacrifice several megabytes of Flash
(yes, instead of RAM Disk, Flash Disk will be the location for OS
files).
b. You can have up to 2 GB of virtual memory for KeySoft.
These are some of the consequences here (I won't go into details
on other changes.
That's all I have today. I tried to explain it in simple terms
(hope it made sense).
Cheers,
Joseph

Subject: [Braillenote] Upgrading from ce 4.2 to 6
Hi Guys. I have listened to some of the theories being chucked
around on this list and on chatts last year that Mr Leigh hoasted
and am just wondering how hard it would actually be to upgrade of
your own free will? I mean if there is a way to do it without
buggering up the bn's braille translator or anything, I would be
quite keen to look into it for myself. Many thanks. Blake Ison.
