Hi:
It is a problem with braille display drivers. Many
are not able to be used except with a serial
interface. I have not used a converter, but have
read on this list that they do work.
Make sure that you use the serial cable supplied
with your BrailleNote as regular cables will not
work.
I found a PowerBraille 40 on ebay for 100 dollars.
It too requires a serial connection.

Subject: [Braillenote] BN as USB braille display?
Hello, I was dismayed that I can't use the terminal
braille option when I
plugged in the USB port. At least that seems to be
the case at the moment.
The choices for setting up the braille display with
Jaws are coms 1 through
4. Must I actually connect a serial port cable
between computer and BN, or
have I got the options wrong? If I can't use the USB
socket for this
purpose, then do serial port to USB converters work
reliably? What I need to
use this for is to use in a work environment where
you're reading pages of
text, and I'd like to read the text just like I do
in the book reader, by
just hitting one thumb key to move to the next words
on the line. I would
like the braille display to use paragraph form, so
that I can read
continuously without worrying about how the document
is actually formatted
on the visual screen. On the Alva braille display,
you have to use both the
pan right and the next line buttons, a complicated
series of button presses
to read text on the screen. Will the BN work for
the purposes I've outlined?
Thanks a lot.
Matthew
