Paul and List,
I noticed many errors in the document. The * was translated as inin and the
word CD's was translated as could's.
Also, the document didn't mention the BrailleSense, which was a definite
mistake.
I also didn't notice any mention of the differences between the way laptops
and notetakers, like the BrailleNote, present the environment. For example,
the BrailleNote uses a user-friendly environment for the blind/deaf-blind,
and its interface isn't graphical; but laptops and the notetakers like
PacMate and BrailleSense, present a gui interface and, in the case of the
laptops, one must learn how to use mouse functions.
It is possible for laptop users to input material in braille if they connect
a BrailleNote BT to their laptop. You can also do this with any braille
display that has a braille style keyboard. These facts are true for
WindowEyes users--I don't know about JAWS.
The document didn't mention that notetakers are more expensive than laptops
with braille displays.
Another thing the document didn't mention was that the mini laptops, like
the SmallTalk Ultra, don't have many usb ports on them and you must carry
around a docking station or powered usb hub if you need to connect extras
like keyboards and braille displays. But notetakers like the BN, have
enough usb ports and both the braille display and keyboard are built in.
My personal opinion is this: a laptop cannot replace a notetaker and a
notetaker cannot replace a laptop. If you can afford it, buy both. To be
honest, I like desktops better than laptops and I like the BN better than a
laptop, too.
I wish the BN wasn't such a battery eater! My BrailleWave will last for
days, maybe even a week, on battery power, but my BN Mpower lasts maybe a
day. I also wish the batteries were user-replacable, like the BrailleWave's
are.
