I do not think there is a limit here, but just remember that, because the interface is usb and because the drive is mechanical, access is MUCH slower than on a thumb drive, and even slower still than a cf card. If access speedis no concern than go for it, but if you want to browse a lot of files without waiting around a while than a couple cf cards may be the way to go. Out course a hard drive is good for long-term backup since it will not be carted throughywhere and subjected to the ware that flash cardsusually are, but just know that a usb hard drive is very slow on a bn.

One option for extra space is an external USB harddrive. I have
one, but I cannot get it to work with the bn because it seems to require both USB ports, and I busted one of my USB ports by accident a while back. The external harddrives can have a limit. I do not know if there is a limit to the size that can be used with the bn, but the largest one of which I have heard is one tera (1000 giga) bytes.
